Patriotism et al ......
I recently saw the much awaited “Rang De Basanti”. This is a superbly made, slickly directed movie and is creating waves among the Indians inside as well as outside India. So what is this movie all about? A group of five brats who learn the rebellion history of India in a different and a unique way and end up doing really great work for the country. The movie depicts patriotism in a never before way and the feeling is conveyed throughout the movie
The movie had created a pre-release buzz and a lot of expectations chiefly because of the star cast. No one was actually looking forward to the story line rather they all were eying Aamir Khan. The movie is raking the moolah at the box office. With every dialog the protagonist says on screen, it is well supported by the audience by heavy applauds and whistles. Aamir has developed a cult and you can practically see people around hymning the songs of the movie. Suddenly everybody is thinking about India and criticizing the politics. It seems the youth of today is all set to rebel without a cause and turn the fate of the country. Having the movie released around the Republic Day, as a strategic move by the producers, indeed have added dough to the fire. These days India is being loved as never before.
But the question arises that what exactly has done all this? The protagonists on screen wearing designer clothes, enjoying in feel good ambience, surrounded with dudes and babes and to add to it every move of theirs in the movie is backed with exceptional rock music. All these amazing and attracting features of those lads sure have made the youths go crazy. Everyone wants to be as stylish and heroic like them. The GenX is mesmerized by the three A’s of the protagonists viz. Attitude, Ambition and Attire. Patriotism comes in package with this. If the story was different but equally stylish, they would have gone crazy about that cause!
So my concern is not loathing the movie but commenting over this out-of-the-blue sudden love for the country and feeling great. Its good to be thinking about the country but only when if pertains to exist. There is no point loving the country for a week and then probably getting disillusioned by another movie. If u r truly patriotic, then you would not let RDB provoke you. You will only appreciate the hard work and thoughts put up the film team. All kudos to the sincere and honest effort by the director and the actors, who were the one who were not influenced by any style and vogue before making this movie. The rest, GenX, only sham DJ (Aamir) from the movie. Lets wait and watch how long this ‘induced’ patriotism lasts!!
Till then “Jai Hind”
